National Novel Writing Month Begins

If you see my children panhandling on the street, please feed them and send them home. If they appear dirty and disoriented it’s because I’m ignoring them. Why? Because once again, I have challenged myself to write 50,000 plus words during the next thirty days.

Funny, since I’m not even sure what I’ll be writing about and NaNoWriMo started nearly twelve hours ago. As (if) my muse moves me, I’ll keep you posted.

Have you ever done anything so ridiculously challenging? How’d it turn out? Any tips for succeeding in the face of the near impossible?

Curious minds want to know.

  1. Good luck! I don’t know if I can handle it. I think I’m going to just try to write more this month. But I feel like I’m missing out…on what. I don’t know. Nanowrimo makes me a crazy woman! Lol.

    • LOL, Ashley. There are days outside of NaNo that make me feel like a crazy woman.

Good luck in writing more this month. Every word we get in is one word closer to “the end”!

  2. Best of luck! I’ve also started NaNoWriMo today, and have since 2007. I did fail in ’10.

I’ve found that it helps if I “care less” about my novel. I can’t do a research intensive novel in NaNoWriMo, else I’ll be paralyzed with the need to get it right. It’s much better if I can just use what’s in my head and pour it on the page.

And music. I have a NaNoWriMo play list I started back in ’07 that I always return to. It really helps if I’m starting to bog down.

  3. Great point on the research heavy novel. It is hard to balance fact with fiction sometimes. I’ve been researching this project for about a year and a half now. When I get to those questionable parts, I’ll simply highlight them and come back to them on a rainy, editing day.

I love your music idea about having a NaNo play list. Usually, I get hooked on an album or two per novel and that helps me out. It might be kind of fun to have a NaNo sound track, though. Might give it a whirl this year.

    Best luck!
